Dewatering

Dewatering in its simplest definition, is the removal of water.

In wastewater treatment, dewatering is the part of the process whereby sludges are reduced in volume and converted from a liquid to a solid product. Biosolids dewatering typically occurs when transportation and storage costs for large volumes can be reduced or when the material is destined for landfill or beneficial reuse. The biosolids dewatering process not only effects the volume but also the nutrient and odour levels of the material.

Bergmeier Environmental employ the following methods to dewater.

• Dredging is a process where the sludge is recovered and transported to another location for further processing.
• Air drying is a process that uses the natural elements of sun, wind and land to evaporate the moisture content.
• Mechanical excavation is a process where some sort of excavation is used to recover wet material where free water is allowed to drain out.
• Centrifuging is a process which uses mechanical force to separate the solid from liquid components.
